The Negro Motorist Green Book was published between 1936 and 1966. It was a guidebook to places that would serve African American travellers during the Jim Crow era. The film that takes its colloquial title is a based-on-a-true-friendship story of refined, black pianist Dr Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) hiring rough-hewn, white Frank ‘Tony Lip’ Vallelonga (Viggo Mortensen) to be his bodyguard on a tour through the Deep South in the 1960s. Following the Green Book, the two men confront repellent racism, segregation and each other’s humanness along the way.
