With The Big Short, Adam McKay successfully dramatised the GFC; if you struggled through explanations of subprime mortgage bubbles back in ’08 then you’ll appreciate the achievement. He pulls this stuff off because he’s an experienced comedy director who’s not afraid to get a little weird. With Vice, he’s tackling another potentially dry yet important topic: the corruptible cogs of legislative power – specifically, the ones that gave former vice-president Dick Cheney so much authority during the invasion of Iraq. Christian Bale plays Dick and wears his best disguise since Batman.
